The blog format has it’s pros and cons.
One of the pros is how easy it is to add new content. But the flip side is that as you add new content, your other content disappears back into the archives and becomes difficult for people to find.
Now, this can be a real problem when you want people to stay on your site! I mean, once they’ve read the article that brought them to your blog, where do they go from there? Do they just close the page and forget about you?
Well, not if you play your cards right!
You really want one of two things – either they go somewhere you send them (like an opt-in page) or they find something else that interests them on your blog. The longer you can keep a reader on your blog, the better it is for you as a blogger.
So, here you are with tons of content, but no way for people to find it because it’s all been pushed back into your archives. What to do?
Well, there are a few things I’m doing right here on this blog to try to keep YOU the reader around:
- Link in your posts – I link out to other posts when it’s appropriate, and I also link to related posts at the bottom of every post.
- Links in your sidebar – Over on the right, you can see that I’ve got links to recent posts and links to most popular posts.
- Your menu bar – up in the menu bar, I have links to my categories, so people can easily find posts on topics they’re interested in.
The menu bar option is awesome, and it’s super easy to do – the most important thing to remember is that you’ve GOT to use good categories for your posts! I basically write about 3 topics – Blogging, Marketing, and Mindset. Everything on my blog that is really important goes into one of those categories.
We had a question the other day about how to make a page that shows all your posts that belong to a certain category, and the truth is that WordPress makes that really easy. The only thing you have to do is categorize each post correctly and then link to it in your menu bar.
With that in mind, I made a video showing you how it’s done:
I hope that was clear! I know I tend to ramble when I talk lol… it took me three tries to get that video under 10 minutes!
