Everybody’s searching for the secret.
You know, the secret to a super successful blog.
The kind of blog that has readers that come back over and over again, that share your posts with their friends, that follow you on Facebook and Twitter, liking and sharing every status update and tweet.
It seems so elusive –
I know people who have blogged for months – even YEARS –
And are feeling really frustrated because they never get anyone coming to read their blog posts, other than a few friends or maybe some people that are in a Facebook group with them.
But it really isn’t that hard to have a successful blog!
It only takes two things –
1. You have to know who your audience is, and
2. You have to give them something of value.
That’s it. There is no other secret. I bet you’ve even heard it before.
And you probably thought to yourself… “Yeah, right. It’s not that easy.”
If you’re like me, and like to think you already know everything, you might have thought –
“Why should I pick a target audience? I can help everybody and have a huge audience!”
Look at it this way…
If you’re a mommy blogger, you’ve got a whole lot of competition – there are literally thousands of mommy bloggers out there.
So, if you want to build a following, you’ve got to actually speak to certain kind of mommy – because if you’re trying to talk to ALL the mommies out there, none of them are going to hear you. Your voice is going to be too spread out to be noticed.
So that’s when you start looking at yourself.
What is there about you that makes you special? What makes you stand out from other moms?
Maybe you homeschool. Maybe you do crafts. Maybe you have triplets. Maybe you’ve gone through PPD.
Trust me – look at yourself. There is SOMETHING about you that makes you special, that makes you stand out. Something that gives you a voice that cuts through all the other mommy blogs like a siren in a storm, calling to the mommies that are like you, and getting them to pay attention.
Because there’s the thing – people want to read your blog when they can relate to it – when they relate to you. When they feel a connection, they’ll keep coming back.
In my blog, I talk to women – moms who stay at home, or WANT to stay at home – and want to create an income from blogging. Because that’s what I do. MY PEOPLE are the people that are like me.
If I didn’t have that clear target market in my mind before I started writing my posts, how would I know who to talk to?
In my next post, I’m going to talk about some ways that you can determine your own niche, your own target market.
Until then, keep true to your passions, and keep taking action!
